Sweatpants are all that fit me right now. At least, that’s how I’m feeling after an indulgent festive season (preceded by a bit of happy wedding weight.) All my favourite pieces are just feeling a little bit too tight, which kind of takes the fun out of dressing up, and a lot out of sale shopping. While I like to pretend there wasn’t a-tears-in-dressing-room incident over a pair of dungarees (there was), I refuse to let a little bit of Winter weight gain turn me into some kind of fashion hermit. The solution? Take those comfort pieces and dress them up, obviously.

I’m a firm believer in investing in good basics year round, and while the checklist tends to read like “brenton top, quality jeans” I feel there is room for a solid pair of joggers in there too. While I hate to go all athleisure on you, jogging bottoms and indeed gym wear aren’t just for the gym. Wearing comfy clothes doesn’t mean that you’ve giving up, and with a bit of layering and creative tailoring you can be office ready in no time. As a general rule I don’t wear heels on a day to day basis (unlike those magical fashion unicorns who can also go bare legged in January) but I’ll make an exception for with joggers. It makes me feel a little bit more polished when quite frankly I’d rather be at home in my moomin jammies. Sometimes it means a lick of lipstick and a pair of heels to inspire a bit of joie de vivre in the wardrobe.
With short days and long nights, comfort really is king. Now where did I put my onesie?
