On Making a Statement

I can't sing the praises of good basics enough. A few safe investment pieces can last a life time and are worth the extra cash. I sound like a broken record at this point. By now, if you've been reading this blog for any length of time, you'll know I love for capsule pieces and near enough everything in my wardrobe is black, blue or grey.  But what about the personality pieces? The parts of my wardrobe that stop me looking like I've just rolled out of Gap?

Hello My Name is Paul Smith

"You can find inspiration everywhere, and if you can't, look again." I'm paraphrasing here, very loosely but there are far worse words to lead with than that of Paul Smith.  "Hello, I'm Paul Smith"opened at Glasgow's Lighthouse on the 21st of January and inspiration is the very beating heart of the exhibition. Digging deep in to the archives of the label the exhibition is as close as you can get to stepping in to one of Britain's most iconic designers minds (how very John Malcovich) hitting all the creative notes on the head. Included within the exhibition you are a recreation of the first shop (a claustrophobic 3m x 3m windowless room) a tower filled with mysterious trinkets posted to Smith over the years from an anonymous fan, and yes - the original Paul Smith multi-stripe mini makes an appearance too. Really though this only scratches the surface of Smith's self-proclaimed "goosebump" exhibition.

Brunch Bites: Singl End

I've been on some what of a personal crusade recently. I say recently, really more of an ongoing saga, one that I'm not entirely sure has an end. In short I've been on the hunt for the perfect brunch spot. Seems pretty simple right? In Glasgow you're spoiled for choice if you're out West or even in the Southside, however I've found the city centre an altogether trickier beast. There's the obvious haunts like Trans-Europe and Riverhill but that's well trodden ground by now. All I can say is thank god for Singl End.

Happy Galentine's Day: Gifts for Your Best Gals

"What is Galentine's Day? Oh only the best day of the year!"  Forget Valentine's, Galentine's is about celebrating your very best lady friends and kicking it breakfast style. The 13th of February means gathering around your favourite lady pals, enjoying some breakfast goods and celebrating the kiss ass stuff you've  all done.  Whether you choose to celebrate with frittatas and mosaics made out of drinks bottles or over a 5000 word essay and a bottle of wine, it's important we DO celebrate it, because there's nothing like bigging up your best girls.

Glitter Cat takes to Sea

Confession time: I'm afraid of boats. Not just one type of boat. All boats. Nothing traumatic ever happened to me on one and in fact I'm a really great swimmer, I just really don't like them. I once cried on the 10 minute ferry ride from mainland to Milport. Sea legs, I just don't have them.  A romantic champagne cruise round one of Scotland's biggest Loch's sounds like my idea of hell, yet there I was on a Sunday afternoon at a boat house, waiting for our "Skippy." It was my honeymoon after all, so no backing out now right?

Bear and I had escaped to Cameron House on Loch Lochmond for our mini-moon. Close enough that we could travel without having to take too much time off, far enough out to feel like a proper holiday. Oh, and in the snow? Perfect. It really would have been rude to come to Loch Lochmond and not see it in all it's glory. There was no chance in hell I was getting Bear on a sea plane and really the boat seemed like the tamer option, even if my legs were feeling a little shaky.

Obscure Couture: Death By Glitter

Death by glitter - what a way to go, right? Yet it seems such a fitting manner for Lynsday Pagan and Jenn Coyle, the design duo behind Obscure Couture, to go out. Obscure Couture first announced they were closing last June, forever making the Glasgow fashion scene a little bit duller. The Glasgow cult favourite had carved out a niche for bold, innovative stage wear, garnering a celebrity following including Ariana Grande and Haim as well as frequenting the pages of Vogue. It wasn't all about the celebrities and the fashion spreads however (although they were nice too) - after 5 years, Obscure Couture had shaped the Scottish indie design circuit. They made us all want to burn a little brighter, fight a little harder and, most of all, make our other clothes jealous. Now, the girls prepare to say goodbye with a wake like no other, on January 30th at Blow Finneston.

Cat Clutches and Chelsea Boots

I feel like I'm constantly fighting a case of wardrobe fatigue.  At times it feels like I've got more clothes than I've had hot dinners. With the bags of discarded pieces I have sitting in my spare room, well, it certainly feels like it. You know we only wear 20% of our wardrobe at a time, right? How the fuck does that  even happen? There is no way I "don't have a thing to wear."  So how do you fight that and make use of your wardrobe?

PMA for the Cynic

"It's about the law of attraction, if you ask the universe for it, it will come."  It's the kind of faux spiritual bullshit that has me rolling my eyes right back in to my skull. "Ask the Universe for it and it will come." Yeah right.

It's almost too easy to fire shots at PMAers. It's like playing a game of aspirational bingo.  It's all about gratitude and living clean and inspirational quotes, and really aren't they just the #luckiest most #blessed person ever? It's enough to make you feel sick. And yet, the PMAers are some of the most productive and succesful people out there. It's not that they aren't putting in the graft, far from it. What it is though is seeing things in a new light. Think of it as less wallowing and more growing and learning. Maybe there is something to positive thinking, but how do I embrace it without wanting to vomit on my own #self #actualisation?

Silver Linings Playbook: A Play by Play on keeping Grey Hair Grey

I've been dying my hair for near enough 13 years, so you'd think I would have got the hang of it by now. Really though, nothing could have prepared me for the personal hell that is grey hair maitenence. I've done my fair share of fashion colours and destroyed my hair beyond belief with years of over bleaching, so surely, silver hair was going to be a cake walk.  Turns out not so much. That said, it's one of my favourite shades, and you  can learn from my mistakes. Consider this dear friends, my play by play to keeping grey hair grey (and not completely losing your shit.)

50 Shades of Grey: Off Duty Basics

Sweatpants are all that fit me right now. At least, that's how I'm feeling after an indulgent festive season (preceded by a bit of happy wedding weight.) All my favourite pieces are just feeling a little bit too tight, which kind of takes the fun out of dressing up, and a lot out of sale shopping.  While I like to pretend there wasn't a-tears-in-dressing-room incident over a pair of dungarees (there was), I refuse to let a little bit of Winter weight gain turn me into some kind of fashion hermit.  The solution? Take those comfort pieces and dress them up, obviously.

Rock n Roll Bride X Crown and Glory

3 days before my wedding and it's 6am in Exeter. I spent the previous couple of days in London shooting for a tv show with my best girls, so I should, by all accounts, be utterly knackered. And I am. But against all rationale I'm also buzzing. I'm off to shoot the Rock n Roll Bride latest collaboration with Crown and Glory with two other real brides in a mansion house and I can't wait.

Couldn't wait really. The closer it got to my wedding the more paniced I became. I had been having a relapse with some nasty body issues, my anxiety was flaring up like never before and after one too many public panic attacks, a day of dressing up like a frigging bridal princess is exactly what I needed. To switch the noise off from everything that was going on in my head and wear light up shoes, lots of glitter and hang with some mega babes. So far so good right?

Even better guys. Other than being exactly the escape I needed, everyone was super sweet, and the collection, well be prepared for photo spam ladies because this is basically everything you could want from a veil collection. Rainbows and sass set to stun.

Best Beauty Buys of 2015

A best of list may seem like an obvious choice for kicking off 2015, but with a resolution to streamline my make-up kit, it's good to take stock of  the new products I've tried and the ones I'll be taking in to the New Year.  Some I've featured on the blog before, others may get more in depth pieces in future, but for now, here's my favourite beauty buys of 2015.
